How Many Gutter Brackets Do I Need?

How We Calculated This

Gutter brackets support the guttering and must be spaced at regular intervals:

  • Gutter run: 6m
  • Maximum spacing: 1m (FloPlast PVC-U Rainwater Installation guide, straight runs of standard Half Round and Square gutter; 800mm on Niagara, 600mm on Xtraflo, 400mm where heavy snowfall is possible)
  • Brackets: ceil(6 ÷ 1) + 1 = 7
  • Brett Martin sets a tighter maximum of 900mm for its PVC-U range, reducing to 600mm where the roof pitch exceeds 35 degrees, the covering is smooth, or heavy snow loading applies. At 900mm the same 6m run needs ceil(6 ÷ 0.9) + 1 = 8 brackets, which works out at 857mm actual centres
  • Always place a bracket within 150mm of each joint and outlet

Bracket Spacing by Material

  • PVC guttering: varies by manufacturer and profile. Types of Bracket

  • Fascia bracket: Screws to the fascia board — most common for replacements
  • Rafter bracket (rise & fall): Screws to the rafter tail — used where no fascia board exists
  • Top rafter bracket: Fixes to the top of the rafter, sits under the tiles
  • Side rafter bracket: Fixes to the side of the rafter

Tips

Set the gutter to fall towards the downpipe outlet at a gradient of about1:350 (roughly 3mm per metre). Use a string line between the highest and lowest bracket to ensure a consistent fall. Always place brackets either side of any joint or union. Use stainless steel screws for longevity.
