Environmental Considerations
Engineered flooring uses less hardwood per board (only the top veneer), making better use of slow-growing timber. The plywood base typically uses fast-growing birch or poplar. Solid wood flooring uses more hardwood but lasts longer and can be refinished many times. Both are sustainable choices when sourced from FSC or PEFC certified forests. At end of life, both can be recycled or repurposed.

Generally no. Solid wood expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes, leading to gaps, cupping and warping over underfloor heating. Engineered wood flooring is specifically designed for UFH — the cross-layered plywood base resists dimensional change. If you must use solid, choose narrow boards (under 100mm) in a stable species like oak, glued down.
It depends on the wear layer thickness. A 4mm wear layer can be sanded 2-3 times, 6mm allows 4-5 sandings. Budget engineered boards with 1-2mm veneer cannot be sanded at all. Each sanding removes about 0.5-1mm. Solid wood boards (18-22mm) can be sanded 8-10+ times over their lifetime.
Yes. The top layer is genuine hardwood (oak, walnut, ash etc.) — typically 3-6mm thick. Only the base layers are plywood or HDF. Once installed, engineered flooring looks and feels identical to solid wood. The cross-layered construction actually makes it more dimensionally stable than solid.
Engineered oak flooring costs £30-70/m² vs £40-80/m² for solid oak. When you factor in that engineered can float over most subfloors (cheaper installation) while solid often needs a timber subfloor or glue-down installation, engineered typically works out cheaper overall. Solid wins on maximum lifespan and number of refinishes.
Not directly. Solid wood on concrete requires either a plywood subfloor (screwed into battens) or full glue-down installation with a moisture barrier. The concrete must have a moisture reading below 75% RH. Engineered flooring can float directly over concrete with just an underlay and DPM, making it much simpler and cheaper.
