Monocouche (French for "single coat") is a factory-mixed, through-colour render applied in one coat (12-15mm) over a scratch coat. Brands include K Rend, Weber, Parex and Baumit. The colour runs throughout the material, so scratches and chips do not show a different colour underneath. It does not need painting.
Materials for sand/cement render cost about £5-10/m² vs £12-18/m² for monocouche. However, sand/cement needs 2-3 coats with drying time between each, plus painting. Including labour and paint, the total cost is often similar: sand/cement typically £40-60/m² (2026 quotes span £30-80) vs monocouche typically £50-75/m² (full range £50-95). Monocouche saves on painting costs over the lifetime.
Monocouche render is less prone to cracking than sand/cement because it contains polymers that allow slight flexibility. However, hairline cracks can still occur due to building movement, poor application, or applying in extreme heat. Sand/cement render is more rigid and cracks more readily, especially if mixed too strong (too much cement).
