The formula
Weight (kg) = Width (m) × Height (m) × Thickness (m) × 2,500 kg/m³
Simplified: Weight (kg/m²) = Thickness (mm) × 2.5
This 2.5 kg/m²/mm rule is for standard float, toughened and patterned glass (2,500 kg/m³). Laminated glass is ~0.8% lighter (PVB interlayer, ~2,480 kg/m³) and Georgian wired glass is ~3% heavier (steel mesh, ~2,570 kg/m³). The calculator applies the right density for the type you choose.

Two types differ slightly: laminated glass is about 0.8% lighter because the PVB interlayer is lighter than glass (~2,480 kg/m³), and Georgian wired glass is about 3% heavier because of the embedded steel mesh (~2,570 kg/m³, i.e. roughly 2.57 kg/m²/mm). No. Toughened (tempered) glass has the same density as float glass at 2,500 kg/m³. The toughening process (heating and rapid cooling) changes the internal stress pattern but not the weight. Patterned glass is also 2,500 kg/m³. The glass types that differ are laminated (marginally lighter, ~2,480 kg/m³, due to the PVB interlayer) and Georgian wired glass (~3% heavier, ~2,570 kg/m³, because of the embedded steel mesh).
For a double glazed unit, calculate each pane weight separately and add them together. The gas fill (air, argon, krypton) between panes adds negligible weight. For example, a 4/16/4 DGU measuring 1m x 1m: Pane 1 = 10 kg + Pane 2 = 10 kg = 20 kg total. Use the dedicated DGU calculator for sealed unit specifications.
For a one-person lift up to about 25 kg, a single heavy-duty suction cup (rated well above the pane weight, e.g. 50 kg+) is adequate. For a two-person lift up to about 33 kg, use dual suction cups. Above that, move to a team lift with multiple lifters or a vacuum lifter frame, and above ~50 kg use mechanical lifting. Always derate for overhead or extended-reach work, where the safe carried weight drops to about 10 kg (men) or 7 kg (women) per person at above-shoulder height under HSE figures. Check suction cups for damage before each use and never rely on suction alone as the sole means of support during overhead glazing.
