How We Calculate This
Our plaster coverage calculator works by dividing your total wall area by the coverage rate of your chosen plaster type. Coverage rates are based on manufacturer guidelines from British Gypsum (Thistle range) and Knauf, using standard UK 25kg bags.
The formula
Bags needed = (Total area ÷ Coverage per bag) × Wastage factor
For example, if you have 36 m² of wall area and you're using multi-finish plaster (10 m² per bag at 2mm skim), you need: 36 ÷ 10 = 3.6 bags, plus 10% wastage = 4 bags.
Coverage rates we use (British Gypsum Thistle datasheets)
- Multi-Finish Skim: 10 m² per 25kg bag at 2mm thickness
- Bonding Coat: 3.5 m² per 25kg bag at 8mm thickness (≈2.75 m² at 11mm)
- Hardwall: 3 m² per 25kg bag at 11mm thickness
- Universal OneCoat: 2.25 m² per 25kg bag at 13mm thickness
- Browning: 3.5 m² per 25kg bag at 11mm thickness
For a fixed bag volume, coverage scales roughly inversely with thickness — applying it thicker covers proportionally less area. Set the Application Thickness in the calculator to match your job and it adjusts the reference coverage automatically. Bonding Coat is the one product whose datasheet publishes two coverage points (3.5 m² at 8mm and 2.75 m² at 11mm); for it the calculator uses the manufacturer's own two-point figures rather than scaling a single value, so the 11mm result matches the datasheet exactly.
These rates are sourced from British Gypsum's published Thistle range datasheets. Actual coverage may vary depending on the surface condition — rough blockwork will use more plaster than smooth plasterboard. The 10% wastage factor accounts for normal mixing and application losses.

Coverage depends on the plaster type and application thickness. Per the British Gypsum Thistle datasheets: Multi-Finish covers ~10 m² per 25kg bag at 2mm skim, Bonding Coat 3.5 m² at 8mm and 2.75 m² at 11mm (both published), Hardwall ~3 m² at 11mm, Universal OneCoat ~2.25 m² at 13mm, and Browning ~3.5 m² at 11mm. Because each bag yields a fixed volume of mix, a thicker coat covers proportionally less area per bag. Always add about 10% for wastage.
Thistle Multi-Finish is a 2mm skim coat, built up in two passes of roughly 1mm each per the British Gypsum MultiFinish Product Data Sheet — coverage is 10 m² per 25kg bag at that thickness. In practice plasterers sometimes carry a two-coat skim to around 3mm over slightly uneven backgrounds, but that is trade practice rather than a manufacturer figure, and coverage drops to roughly 6.7 m² per bag. Bonding coat (also called undercoat plaster) is applied first to bare walls at 8-11mm thickness to create a flat base. Multi-finish (or skim coat) is the final 2-3mm smooth finish applied on top. A typical UK room (3.5m × 4m with 2.4m ceiling height) has roughly 36 m² of wall area. You'd need approximately 4 bags of Multi-Finish for the 2mm skim coat (at 10 m²/bag + 10% wastage), plus around 12 bags of Bonding Coat for the 8mm undercoat (at 3.5 m²/bag + 10% wastage). A standard 2400 × 1200mm plasterboard sheet has a face area of 2.88 m². Multi-Finish covers 10 m² per 25kg bag at a 2mm skim, so one bag skims roughly 3.5 boards — about 0.3 bags per board before wastage. For example, a 12-board wall (about 34.6 m²) needs 34.6 ÷ 10 ≈ 3.5 bags, rounding up to 4 bags once you add 10% wastage.
