UK Tile Adhesive Coverage Rates

Typical coverage rates: walls with standard tiles (up to 300x300 mm) using a 6 mm notch trowel need about 2-3 kg/m². Floors with larger tiles (300x300 to 600x600 mm) using a 10-12 mm notch trowel need about 4-6 kg/m². Large format tiles (600x600 mm+) may need back-buttering, which adds 1-2 kg/m². Always check the manufacturer coverage rate for the specific product.

The trowel notch size depends on tile size: 6 mm for tiles up to 200x200 mm (small wall tiles), 10 mm for tiles 200-400 mm (standard floor tiles), and 12 mm for tiles over 400 mm (large format). For very large tiles (600x600+), some installers use a 12 mm or 15 mm trowel plus back-buttering. The goal is full, solid bedding under the tile: BS 5385-1:2018 requires no voids for any tile of 0.1 m² or more in surface area, and trade practice commonly targets around 80% adhesive contact in dry areas and 95% in wet areas or externally as a rule of thumb, aligned with the American ANSI A108.5 standard rather than the British standard.

Flexible adhesive (S1 or S2 class per BS EN 12004) for underfloor heating, timber substrates, large format tiles, and anywhere subject to movement or vibration. Rapid-set for quick turnaround jobs (walkable in 2-3 hours). White adhesive for translucent or light-coloured tiles. Standard grey for most floor and wall applications. Thick-bed adhesive for correcting minor substrate irregularities up to 12-15 mm.

Yes, for tiles over 400 x 400 mm and all natural stone tiles, back-buttering (applying a thin skim of adhesive to the back of the tile as well as the substrate) is recommended to achieve full coverage. BS 5385-1:2018 requires solid bedding with no voids for any tile of 0.1 m² or more in surface area, and back-buttering large tiles helps close the gaps a single-sided notched bed can leave. Air pockets under large tiles cause cracking and loose tiles.

It depends on tile type and area, but as a guide: a 4 m² en-suite floor with porcelain tiles (3.0 m² coverage per 20kg bag) needs 2 bags before wastage, 3 bags with the standard 10% wastage allowance. An 8 m² bathroom floor with standard large ceramic tiles, 300 mm and up, (3.5 m² per 20kg bag) needs 3 bags before wastage, 4 with wastage. A 15 m² kitchen floor with the same ceramic tile needs 5 bags before wastage, 6 with wastage. Bed thickness follows from the notch trowel size rather than being chosen separately: combing a notched bed and pressing the tile into it collapses the ridges to roughly half the notch depth. A 6 mm notch gives roughly a 3 mm bed (small wall tiles), a 10 mm notch roughly a 5 mm bed (standard 300-600 mm floor tiles), and a 12 mm notch roughly a 6 mm bed (large format 600 mm+). Never exceed the adhesive manufacturer maximum bed thickness, typically 15 mm for standard cementitious adhesive, as an over-thick bed can slump or fail to cure through fully.
