There is no British Standard or Building Regulation for plaster drying time — manufacturer Product Data Sheets only quote setting time (when the surface can be trowelled). Paint-ready timing is a trade convention, so this tool gives an indicative estimate: always confirm dryness by uniform light colour (and a moisture meter) before painting. Our model starts from realistic UK trade guidance for each plaster type, then adjusts for room temperature, airflow and any dehumidifier.

The base days plus per-mm rate floor a thin skim at a realistic minimum (a 2mm skim comes out around 5 days, not 2) — the old “1mm = 1 day” rule under-estimated thin coats.

Wet plaster appears dark. As it dries, it turns progressively lighter — from dark brown/pink to pale pink to white. The plaster is dry enough to paint when the entire surface is a uniform light colour with no dark patches and feels dry, not cold. A pin-type moisture meter can help, but readings on plaster are only indicative — they are quoted as Wood Moisture Equivalent (WME) and air-dry plaster sits around 0.5% WME. Judge primarily by the uniform light colour rather than chasing an exact meter number.

Painting over damp plaster traps moisture behind the paint film. This leads to peeling, bubbling, staining, and potential mould growth. The paint will not adhere properly and will need to be stripped and re-done. Always wait until plaster is fully dry and apply a mist coat (diluted emulsion, 70:30 paint to water) before the full coat.
The ideal temperature for plastering and drying is 15-25°C. Below 5°C, plaster can freeze before it sets, causing it to fail. Above 30°C, it may dry too quickly and crack. In winter, gently heat the room before and during plastering. Avoid draughts during application but open windows for drying after the plaster has set.
